08/09 IJHL CHAMPIONS!
The New England Stars Jr A team capped off an unbelievable comeback in Game 3 to beat the Maine Moose and win their first IJHL Super Elite Championship.
Down 4-0 half way through the game, Greg Girtatos tallied his first goal of the playoffs on assists from Logan Brown and Matt Kerwin. Just over a minute later Kyle Busby tallied the first of his two consecutive goals when he beat Moose goaltender Zack Parent on the power play from Brad Irving to cut the deficit to two. Busby made it a one goal game at the end of the second to keep the momentum going into the intermission.
The third period went scoreless until Brad Irving got the equalizer with eight minutes remaining from Busby and Milisci to make it 4-4. Less than two minutes later, Adam Chevarie put the Stars up for good as he tallied the game winner from Brown at 13:32. Aaron Van Dyck got his first start of the playoffs, and made a great save late to preserve the one goal lead and backbone the Stars to the Championship.
"What a great way to win a Championship," said Head Coach Dan Fontas after the game. "It felt like the officials were looking out to make all the calls against us and we put ourselves in a huge hole being behind 4-0, but these kids have been doing this all year long. They have been perservering and not taking NO for an answer. I am so proud of our players for the way the kept battling. They wanted this more than anything and they we not going to be satisfied with anything less"
