In an effort to serve our youth families and expand the Hockey Academy/New England Stars brand, the Stars are pleased to announce they will begin to offer youth lacrosse programs.

"I am very excited to be growing the New England Stars brand by offering a Lacrosse Club," said New England Stars President Dan Fontas. "I have been thinking of this for a while and now seems like the best time to get it going. I am a firm believer in our hockey players playing sports besides hockey. You need to be a well-rounded athlete in order to succeed at a higher level of competition and lacrosse is a sport that helps hockey players develop. The New England Stars hockey club has about 350 players in our program and now we get to allow our players the opportunity to continue to develop through our organization with the Lacrosse club."

David Wood, a New England Stars hockey coach, will be the Stars' Director of Lacrosse, and will have a heavy hand in the organization's operations.

"Dave is a very detailed oriented person. He brings great passion and organizational skills that will allow for our club to successful," he said. "Dave will facilitate our development path for our players.  I am very excited to be working with Dave in his role with our club."

Wood said he is excited to get the Stars Lacrosse program off the ground.

"I wanted to create an environment that affords our youth athletes a lacrosse experience that was unlike any that they have been apart of," he said.

The Stars Lacrosse program will not play in a league immediately but instead offer some high level spring/summer skills clinics. The Stars Lacrosse program will also have late spring/ summer teams that practice weekly and play in 2 – 3 summer tournaments.

Wood has been a lacrosse player since high school. The sport has evolved over the last 20 years, he said, and is now growing so fast that it is important the players are taught proper skills so they can reach their highest potential in the sport.

"I went on to play in college and then to coach it," he said. "I love the speed, tradition and history of the game. When done properly there is an enormous amount of camaraderie that can be achieved with a team."

Wood said he and the lacrosse staff will train young athletes to compete hard and be a good teammate, and support them if they choose to continue their lacrosse career into college and beyond.

"While the speed of the game has certainly picked up the tradition remains that same. Our staff understands this and is ready to train and develop youth athletes into the next level players. Years ago a natural athlete could pick up a stick and keep up with the game. This is very rare now with the speed and skills required to be successful," he said.
